Lots of 10 lbers. and some 20lbrs. have been caught. In over 40 years of fishing the Lake I've never seen anything like it. Simply amazing! I will continue to travel doing fly fishing shows, next spring I'll be down in L.A. with my show "Pyramid Lake Land of the Giants". Baetis are hatching with regularity. The best time of day is from noon to 3pm. The dry fly action has picked up considerably. Try a #14 or #16 parachute Adams or your favorite CDC pattern. On a Guide Trip on Nov. 9th These two ladies each stuck a big brown while nymphing in deep water. &nbsp; If you can , get out and fish!<br />Call (775) 722-2267 for a trip.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MNM-6vs5XCE/UoA-XII2_6I/AAAAAAAAANY/3Hq27sg0MUQ/s1600/IMG_8178.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MNM-6vs5XCE/UoA-XII2_6I/AAAAAAAAANY/3Hq27sg0MUQ/s320/IMG_8178.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-c7Brj44GwcI/UoA-XUmhC5I/AAAAAAAAANc/CAxB8GNplc8/s1600/IMG_8183.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-c7Brj44GwcI/UoA-XUmhC5I/AAAAAAAAANc/CAxB8GNplc8/s320/IMG_8183.JPG" width="320" /></a></div></div>Doug O.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10859372697433736359noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5848325548582988562.post-67785830928311342752013-08-21T19:42:00.002-07:002013-11-25T16:12:03.478-08:00Truckee River Nymphing Clinic - Stellar ! Both days sold out very quickly. The positive feedback from the attendees was incredible ! We received several outstanding &nbsp;testimonials. It went so well that Matt and I decided to put on another clinic on October 5th &amp; 13th. Anyone interested is joining us please contact Gilligan at&nbsp;<a href="http://gilligansguideservice.com/blog/">http://gilligansguideservice.com/blog/&nbsp;</a>&nbsp;. &nbsp; We will cover many styles and techniques of "short line nymphing" including leader set ups, fly selection, and reading the water. It was by far the very best clinic we have had so far. This was undoubtably due to the acquisition of guide/instructor Ernie Gulley. Ernie is a phenomenal teacher and angler, his techniques are second to none. Working with him made my job &nbsp;easier much more and enjoyable. As always we were fortunate to have outstanding client/students. &nbsp; They spent the two days soaking up as much information as possible. The lake was in excellent shape offering a number of different angling opportunities. We had some prolific sight fishing "peek a boo" style, "Floater no Cator", and indicator "DCA" situations. Again, ideal &nbsp;conditions. Along with all of this our camp cook Loren Schweigert did a solid job feeding the group. We have just a few spots left for the July clinic so don't wait, book now!<a href="http://www.fivedotflyfishing.com/"> www.fivedotflyfishing.com</a><br />Photos:<br />Top - Ed Johnston<br />2nd - Larry Heywood<br />3rd - Group picture June 2013<br />Bottom &nbsp;- Robby Hogg<br /><br />Doug O. Good Stuff !<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">March Browns were hatching in good numbers today on the Truckee River. On a guide trip with Nancy Y., she got a 21 plus in. female rainbow and an even bigger male brown. She did an outstanding job fighting the fish. &nbsp; Both fish took a #12 "Sweet Pea". &nbsp; The river was up a bit and slightly off color however, this did not stop the fish from feeding on the mayflies. &nbsp;Nancy did a great job wading to the necessary spots to hook the fish. I've been working on my new web sites "www.truckeeriverflyfishing.com" and "www.fivedotflyfishing.com". &nbsp; When you get a chance check them out.<br />I have been giving biweekly "I was there" fishing reports on the web site www.truckeeriverfltfishing.com.<br /><br />Now to catch up on what's happening.<br />I've been very busy guiding the river since January. These trips have produced some very fine fish.<br />I want to thank all of my clients especially my repeat clients. &nbsp;I've posted some pics of some of this year's trips.<br />The Truckee River has been fishing well since January. Baetis nymphs have been very productive and on cloudy days the fish have been on BWO dries! &nbsp; As usual Stonedaddys &nbsp;have stuck some BIG rainbows. <br /><br />This year I'll working with and for three of my very good friends, Master Guide Dave Stanley, Master Guide Matt "Gilligan" Koles, and Ernie Gulley. &nbsp; These guys are all great guides and expert anglers. Dave owns the<b> "Truckee River Outfitters"</b>, Gilligan owns <b>"Gilligan's Guide Service"</b> and Ernie owns <b>"Ernie Gulley's Guide Service". </b>&nbsp;In Nevada I will be working as a sub guide under both Dave Stanley and Matt "Gilligan" Koles.<br /><br />Ernie will be working with me on the 5 DOT Clinics. He is an incredible stillwater angler with some exceptional techniques. He is one of the very best guides on Crowley Lake " The Crowley Crusher", &nbsp;so if you are planning to fish there give him a call.<br /><br />Gilligan knows the river like the back of his hand. He spends a tremendous amount of time on the water, when he's not guiding he is spending his days off fishing. He is a true angler and is a pleasure &nbsp;to fish with.<br />We are planning on doing some clinics together this year. Check back with us for the dates.<br /><br />Dave has guided the river and surrounding waters longer than anyone. He owned the Reno Fly Shop for 30 years. He is a "master angler" as well as an expert hunter. &nbsp; We have been friends for a very long time.<br /><br />I am proud and privileged to be able to work with such fine people as these. We all have one thing in common "A Passion for Fly Fishing".<br /><br />If anyone has any questions please give me a call at (775) 722-2267 or email me at; calvadaflyfishing@sbcglobal.net<br /><br />So far in 2013 - top to bottom<br />Josh Bradley<br />Missy P.<br />Mike Sevon<br />Pat R.<br />Betsy C.<br />Kailey P.<br />Duane Dotts<br />Barney Rubble<br /><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WQujr7T4IGw/UThLWcyHNVI/AAAAAAAAAF8/ggYjvKvlOtk/s1600/JOSH+BIG+BOW+218+copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WQujr7T4IGw/UThLWcyHNVI/AAAAAAAAAF8/ggYjvKvlOtk/s320/JOSH+BIG+BOW+218+copy.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cGITNUIfodA/UThLimoC9eI/AAAAAAAAAGE/bxqg2XhhClI/s1600/IMG_7059.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cGITNUIfodA/UThLimoC9eI/AAAAAAAAAGE/bxqg2XhhClI/s320/IMG_7059.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hvorZaVVRyo/UThLo7xmo_I/AAAAAAAAAGM/_a_uFqsh9E8/s1600/IMG_7160.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hvorZaVVRyo/UThLo7xmo_I/AAAAAAAAAGM/_a_uFqsh9E8/s320/IMG_7160.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-P1H52Ro_Nio/UThMGKbI5dI/AAAAAAAAAGU/JIUKP507n8o/s1600/IMG_7122.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-P1H52Ro_Nio/UThMGKbI5dI/AAAAAAAAAGU/JIUKP507n8o/s320/IMG_7122.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U46g9NyyB2s/UThMGKj_aSI/AAAAAAAAAGY/_hoADYxjwEU/s1600/IMG_7133.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-U46g9NyyB2s/UThMGKj_aSI/AAAAAAAAAGY/_hoADYxjwEU/s320/IMG_7133.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I5t-U3dRobE/UThMvBW-I1I/AAAAAAAAAGk/qSvTCZhsXnE/s1600/IMG_7161.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I5t-U3dRobE/UThMvBW-I1I/AAAAAAAAAGk/qSvTCZhsXnE/s320/IMG_7161.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WHUmHdgSSLk/UThM8MgSgOI/AAAAAAAAAGs/IPoycn9jMRA/s1600/IMG_7052.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WHUmHdgSSLk/UThM8MgSgOI/AAAAAAAAAGs/IPoycn9jMRA/s320/IMG_7052.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BmWcD1GWyKg/UThNYfmsInI/AAAAAAAAAG0/SymTdo3gDDY/s1600/IMG_7093.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BmWcD1GWyKg/UThNYfmsInI/AAAAAAAAAG0/SymTdo3gDDY/s320/IMG_7093.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><br /></div>Doug O.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10859372697433736359noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5848325548582988562.post-27659991391087253442012-10-11T21:43:00.001-07:002012-10-11T21:43:25.422-07:00<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5on4Mxe2X28/UHefgXJL44I/AAAAAAAAAFk/8FaWBjHqUfs/s1600/IMG_6602.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5on4Mxe2X28/UHefgXJL44I/AAAAAAAAAFk/8FaWBjHqUfs/s320/IMG_6602.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Check out this BIG brown that Kate from Washington D.C. caught this week on a guide trip with Doug O. &nbsp; It was her first time fly fishing! Fished Diamond Lake and a bay at Wickiup Res. Both places had&nbsp; good callibaetis hatches. I used a floating line with a 25ft.leader with 4x tippet. Stuck some big fish on my "redheaded stepchild"pattern (#16)and my "clear water callibaetis"pattern&nbsp;which&nbsp;are very good callibaetis imitations, both are unweighted. &nbsp; Here's a few pics of the fish.Doug O.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10859372697433736359noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5848325548582988562.post-41876350315288441782011-07-18T09:20:00.000-07:002011-07-18T09:25:10.940-07:005 DOT CLINIC<div class="separator" style="clear: both; It is a 400 acre private fishery located 15 miles north of Susanville Calif. &nbsp; It supports many great hatches including chironomids, callibaetis, and damsels. It also has leeches, water boatmen and baitfish. Carpenter ants and termite hatches occur annually providing some excellent dry fly opportunities. The reservoir is packed with FAT, healthy rainbows. Because of the incredible food available, the&nbsp;fish grow fast and fight with fury.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; To book a day on this exceptional stillwater contact <a href="mailto:calvadaflyfishing@sbcglobal.net">calvadaflyfishing@sbcglobal.net</a>&nbsp;or <a href="http://www.truckeeriveroutfitters.com/">http://www.truckeeriveroutfitters.com/</a>.Doug O.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10859372697433736359noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5848325548582988562.post-29359052621315163932011-03-08T18:10:00.000-08:002011-03-08T23:09:10.703-08:00PYRAMID GIANTS<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7fmgkMyuIIc/TXbZv2AZJiI/AAAAAAAAAB4/8QQG96jC124/s1600/GIANT+CUTT+ON+LADYBUG+DRY+IMG_1708.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" q6="true" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7fmgkMyuIIc/TXbZv2AZJiI/AAAAAAAAAB4/8QQG96jC124/s320/GIANT+CUTT+ON+LADYBUG+DRY+IMG_1708.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9W9yJqz8cEY/TXbaSkEQ6XI/AAAAAAAAAB8/o-jKIHUKx2g/s1600/LOU%2527S+BIG+cutt+IMG_1892+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" q6="true" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9W9yJqz8cEY/TXbaSkEQ6XI/AAAAAAAAAB8/o-jKIHUKx2g/s320/LOU%2527S+BIG+cutt+IMG_1892+%25282%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-eERYCb1WHCs/TXbacceq6JI/AAAAAAAAACA/7HQI0Cc2-vY/s1600/10lbs.+FLOATER+NO+CATORIMGP3079+-+Copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="217" q6="true" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-eERYCb1WHCs/TXbacceq6JI/AAAAAAAAACA/7HQI0Cc2-vY/s320/10lbs.+FLOATER+NO+CATORIMGP3079+-+Copy.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Mn9c7IletDE/TXbbXixvelI/AAAAAAAAACE/dXWYZN0l0ro/s1600/PYRAMID+POPCORN+Fishing+006+-+Copy.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" q6="true" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Mn9c7IletDE/TXbbXixvelI/AAAAAAAAACE/dXWYZN0l0ro/s320/PYRAMID+POPCORN+Fishing+006+-+Copy.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>It's Pyramid time! This is the time of year to get a chance on a true trophy Lahontan Cutthroat. From now until the end of May these huge trout cruise in close to shore giving the flyfisher a great shot at sticking them. There are different techniques that are effective&nbsp;such as a shooting head or a&nbsp;fast sinking line with a popcorn beetle and a woolybugger, or a floating line with a couple of BIG (#8) midge patterns.&nbsp; These midges can be fished with or without an indicator. I prefer to fish WITHOUT one,the feel of the GRAB is awesome!&nbsp; Most anglers fish from a ladder, however I along with a small group of friends DO NOT fish from ladders. We feel that we have better line control by fishing on our feet. If you weigh one of these giants be sure to use a "sling" or rubber net, DO NOT HANG THE FISH directly on a scale (grip),for this will mortaly injure the animal!Doug O.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10859372697433736359noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5848325548582988562.post-76753301700926379842011-03-08T17:18:00.000-08:002011-03-08T23:17:45.482-08:00WELCOME TO MY BLOGWelcome to my blog site. As I build this site I'll try to keep the fishing reports accurate and current. As a guide and angler I'm on the water over 200 days a year. We will talk about our&nbsp;local waters like the&nbsp;Truckee River, Pyramid Lk, Davis Lk.,&nbsp;Frenchman Res., Eagle Lk.,and 5 DOT Res.&nbsp; We will cover some&nbsp;Oregon waters such as Diamond Lk. Crane Prarie&nbsp;and Klamath Lk.&nbsp;&nbsp; We will also talk about some&nbsp;Northern Nevada stillwaters. &nbsp; We will&nbsp;discuss rods, reels, nets, waders, insect hatches&nbsp;and more.&nbsp; I would like to give special thanks to Zach Lazzari for helping me put together this site. You&nbsp;can see Zach in the "Truckee River Monster Browns" video and throughout the blog pages to come. I have a link to his blog site "Flyfishin Fool".&nbsp; For those of you who found&nbsp;my site, thank you and pass it on !&nbsp;&nbsp; Doug O.Doug O.http://www.blogger.com/profile/10859372697433736359noreply@blogger.com0
