Lake Davis is a actually a man made reservoir that was impounded in 1967. It is located approximately 7 miles from the town of Portola California. It was originally stocked heavily with both rainbow and cutthroat trout. These fingerlings grew very fast due to the immense aquatic food available to the fish created by the shallow mud bottom environment. The reservoir opened to fishing in 1968. The first three years were incredible! We started sight fishing it in 1969 with outstanding success. After a number of ups and downs through the years, including largemouth bass and a terrible pike infestation, Davis is finally getting back on track. The once prolific damsel, midge, and caddis hatches are returning along with a good hexagenia mayfly hatch that showed up a few years ago.
After fishing Lake Davis for 45 years it’s nice to know it is coming back!
